Gardening has become one of the staples of owning a home that seemed poised to diminish in recent years with the advent of women in professional careers, but has in fact made a comeback due to the rise in eco-friendly living and food prices.  Many housewives now have begun to devote their time to creating organic gardens, even compost heaps, in an effort to better the nutrition of their family.  The economy has additionally helped in developing more gardens around the nation, as people are trying to save money on the rising cost of groceries through opting for home-grown methods.

Many Americans have additionally recognized the health benefits as well as the cost benefits in growing vegetables from home.  This easy endeavor was a thing of the past until the economy and green movement have rekindled a new generation of gardeners.  The amount of money a garden saves you monthly can be a noticeable change on many of your expenses, as most vegetables cost merely pennies to make.  Picking out what you want to grow is half the fun in creating your own garden, as well as realizing that you are in charge of every aspect of the vegetable’s growth.  You are in charge of nurturing it, as well as ensuring it reaches a certain stage before picking it.

There is a certain joy that comes with creating your own garden in your own backyard that is unparalleled.  Flower gardens are no longer what women strive to maintain, but have instead been replaced by organic vegetables and other natural types of food.  The popularity of gardening has grown so much that many herb seeds and plant sales have risen up 40 percent from last year, indicating a new boom in business.  This new generation of gardeners has not only revisited an older pastime, but also has been heavily involved in green measures that are helping to preserve the environment.  Health and food safety have become big issues for many eco-friendly moms who have opted to try their hand at gardening as a healthy alternative.  This way, they are aware of every chemical that is going into their children’s stomachs, rather than relying on the safety of commercial grocery stores.  While the rise in food prices is the major reasoning for the influx of gardens, the ability to revisit an age old tradition which older generations participated in, is a different experience altogether.

Gardening is a difficult task to undertake, and many first-timers have to be properly educated as to the amount of labor that can go into maintaining an effective vegetable garden.  With the recent rise in seed sales, more gardening stores have been forced to give lessons to many of these new gardeners, though they see this as a blessing in disguise since their sales have tripled in recent months.  Gardening has become a new fad across the country that has served to recreate a simpler time in our nation’s history.

The world is changing faster now than at any time since the last ice-age 10,000 years ago and the major cause of that change is man. To allow the changes to continue unchecked is reckless at the least. Monitoring those changes and being able to convince others that we have to do or not do activities that affect the environment will take well qualified people with the relevant environmental science degree.

It has often been said that the education offered in colleges and universities are a direct response to the job market and the trends therein. If this is so then the future for professionals with an environmental science degree could not be much brighter.

After the industrial and the informational age, we are quickly entering the environmental age, where the environment and its characteristics are of paramount importance.

Never before, as a society, have we paid real attention to the environment and many would argue we still do not pay enough attention. Continuous exploitation of the earths natural resources and constant generation of heat and waste products have caused significant damage to the environment.

We live in an age where knowing, understanding and adapting to the environment is no longer a choice – it is the only way ahead. This age demands qualified professionals, especially those with professional environmental science degrees.

A number of allied degrees find their place alongside conventional environmental science degrees. Big business has, for a long time, been required to comply with safety and industrial security requirements. In industries like biotechnology, due to the nature of the products, there are numerous opportunities for disaster.

Disaster management and hazardous material management are fields of study that are very much in demand by today’s high technology industries. While often these studies are not comprehensive enough to be offered as science degrees by themselves, these courses are more often than not partnered with environmental science degrees as part of a package deal.

For the environmental science degree student, it can be an advantage. While pursuing their main course of study, they can get qualifications in a number of allied fields. This makes them thorough professionals and capable of entering a wide range of industries when they graduate with their environmental science degree.

As a result of the long-standing lobbying activities, the United States is home to some of the worlds largest and best funded environmental groups and many professionals, working for these groups, have environmental science degrees.

Jobs exist with government bodies, lobbying positions with political groups and corporate organizations, research positions with foundations and other research organizations. More opportunities exist in the environmental safety departments of leading oil majors and even faculty positions at colleges offering environmental science degrees. They all offer lucrative positions that professionals with an environmental science degree can hope to secure.

An environmental science degree does not deal with environmental topics alone. Due to the very nature of their work, professionals who acquire an environmental science degree need to be equipped with allied subjects like compliance, law, criminal justice, and public communication.

The courses of study that ultimately lead to a environmental science degree are varied and interesting. Someone with an environmental science degree is likely to be tasked with protecting our environment as a result we need the very best!

If you have a concern about the World we live in or a desire and determination to do something to improve a steadily deteriorating habitat, then an environmental science degree would be an excellent place to start.

Anyone aspiring to be an environmental professional would typically need to go in for a BS Environmental Science Degree before going for an MS or a PhD in Environmental Studies.

Environment science degrees are offered in all major colleges and universities across the United States and the Western World. An environmental science degree can be taken full-time, part-time or by distance learning so whatever your circumstances you can contribute.

These days there is there is a lot buzz about the world going green and preserving the environment. Well, I think that all of you might be reading something or the other about “environment and ecology” in newspaper, magazines or over the internet. So, let me throw light on this topic.

What is Environmental Science?

Environmental science is an expression encompassing the wide range of scientific disciplines that need to be brought together to understand and manage the natural environment and the many interactions among physical, chemical, and biological components.

Individuals may operate as Environmental scientists or a group of scientists may work together pooling their individual skills. The most common model for the delivery of Environmental science is through the work of an individual scientist or small team drawing on the peer-reviewed, published work of many other scientists throughout the world.

What is the function of Environmental Science?

The role of environmental science is to describe the hazards related to environment, interpret the impact of human actions on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and to develop strategies for restoring ecosystems. In addition, environmental scientists help planners develop and construct buildings, transportation corridors, and utilities that protect water resources and reflect efficient and beneficial land use.

Environmental chemistry is the study of chemical alterations in the environment. Principal areas of study include soil contamination and water pollution. The topics of analysis involve chemical degradation in the environment, multi-phase transport of chemicals (for example, evaporation of a solvent containing lake to yield solvent as an air pollutant), and chemical effects upon biota.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of environmental science, teams of professionals commonly work together to conduct environmental research or to produce Environmental Impact Statements. Environmental science encompasses issues such as climate change, conservation, biodiversity, water quality, groundwater contamination, soil contamination, and use of natural resources, waste management, sustainable development, disaster reduction, air pollution, and noise pollution.

Environmental science has been studied, evaluated and researched for many years. This has been driven by the need for a large multi-disciplined team to analyze complex environmental problems, the arrival of substantive environmental laws requiring specific environmental protocols of investigation, and growing public awareness of a need for action in addressing environmental problems.

As ecosystems around the world continue to deteriorate, demand for people with an environmental science degree will continue to grow. Earning such a degree from an
Australian college can open many doors in this field.

One of the reasons you may wish to take your degree from a college in Australia has to do with this country’s unique flora and fauna as well as some of the unique environmental challenges faced by Australia. College degrees in environmental science offered in this country gives you the opportunity to see these problems up-close and study them in depth.

Of course, attending college in Australia can also provide a more global perspective and looks very good on a resume. There are many regions of Australia that are similar to parts of the U.S.; in addition, Australia is near the rainforest areas of Indonesia and southeastern Asia. You will be able to see how ecological issues are being addressed in these regions.

In addition, Australia is currently facing an ongoing drought that has been going on for several decades. An environmental science degree program from an Australian college can provide an important opportunity to look at some of the water issues that will soon be faced by western states such as Utah, Nevada, Arizona and southern California.

In order to take advantage of an environmental science degree from a college in Australia, some advance planning is required; you need to apply for such programs at least one year in advance, and should start preparing for your stay well ahead of time. You should also check out a number of different programs around the country (Australia is an immense country in terms of size; going from Perth to Sydney by ground transportation takes a minimum of six days) in order to determine which are most suitable for you and will best help you in reaching your academic goals.

People today are more conscious of the environment than ever before. There are many tips and methods to help out, starting with driving green. What we do affects the environment little by little. But adding it up throughout the years will total to a big help. And with so many people doing the same thing, the world still has a chance to recover. Global warming is a big deal, because it affects every one of us. That is why changing even a small part of our lifestyle is important.

  1. Join or start your own carpool. This is recommended to those who live far away from work or school with neighbors nearby who go to the same destination. You can ask them to join you and vice versa. Believe me, unless they don’t care about the environment and money, they’ll be happy to oblige. Not only are you going green, you also make friends along the way.
  2. Warm up the car before using it. Warming the car for a few minutes has its benefits. Unless you’re in so much hurry, five minutes, at most, will make a huge difference. Warmer cars use less energy than cool ones, especially during the winter.
  3. Make the most out of your trips. Instead of filling your tank on a Saturday, do it on the way home. Also, if you can make one trip and do multiple tasks, do it! You’re helping to save Mother Earth. Go to the supermarket after work or pick your children after work. Don’t stop unnecessarily. You’ll end up saving money intended for gas.
  4. Don’t let your car idle around. Instead of going to a drive-thru, go inside and order. Did you know that 20 seconds of leaving the car idle emits more carbon dioxide than driving it around? Also, when you’re in traffic, shift the gear to neutral to lessen the energy consumed by the car.
  5. Have your car serviced regularly.
  6. Drive smartly. Drive smoothly instead of accelerating too much. Slow driving is better than going too fast. 55mph or below are the best speeds, because every mile too fast decreases the fuel economy by 1%. Also, Turning off the air-con is also good for the environment and gas mileage. Open the car windows instead to keep air flowing while you and the car are ventilated well.
  7. Use other kinds of transportation. Whenever possible, ride a bike or use public transportation, except taxis of course. These are cheaper compared to driving a private car. It also reduces the emission of carbon dioxide in the air. Another benefit is the quicker arrival, since there’s always traffic on busy roads. These can also be a form of exercise, since biking is also a cardio activity. Walking to the bus station or the subway is also beneficial to your health. You don’t need to go to the gym and waste more money.
  8. Remove things that cause wind resistance. Some items like tow-hook carriers and roof racks cause wind resistance. When not in use, remove them from the car. Wind resistance affects the energy cars use, so as much as possible, keep it at a minimum.
  9. Avoid quick starts and use the right gears. Quick starts have a big effect on the energy consumption of cars, so does using incorrect gears. To know when to shift, listen to the machine. Does it sound strained? If it does, go to the next gear and so on. The RPM on the car will tell you when you’re doing fine.
  10. 10.  Just buy a green car. There are many hybrid cars being sold on the market these days. Although some are more expensive than ordinary cars, the effect it has on our environment should be good enough reason to buy it. Green cars don’t emit poisonous gases in the air by using natural gas or electricity. Something to think about though: Discarding a car will harm the environment, so does the making of one more car however green it is.

By taking note of the tips above, the effect not only goes to the environment, but also to our savings. With high fuel prices still going up, there’s no stopping the future that we will soon have to do something about it. It’s good to start right now, so it won’t be hard when it becomes really necessary. Mother Nature is having a hard time now. We still have beautiful trees and a good climate, but if we continue to destroy the environment, it will be gone.
